Biochemicals Collection

This collection contains 25 structure models showing the four major types of biochemicals:  carbohydrates, fatty acids, nucleic acids (or nucleotides), and proteins (or amino acids).  Worksheets and eight unlabeled structures give students a chance to practice identifying these four groups of macromolecules.  Two worksheets can accompany this investigation:
     - DNA structure and identifying nucleotides
     - Investigating biochemicals.

Another interactive way to practice identifying biochemicals is for students to play a game like Go Fish, or Solitaire with Biochemi™ cards.  Learn more.

Threes of fatty acids, nucleotides,
carbohydrates, and peptides.

Glucose, a sugar made by photosynthesis.

PubChem

Sucrose is a sugar.  It's a disaccharide because it contains two subunits.

PubChem

Amylose–a polymer of D-glucose and a component of starch

PubChem

Butyric acid is a short chain fatty acid.

PubChem

Oleic acid is a fatty acid.

PubChem

Palmitic acid is a long-chain fatty acid.

PubChem

ATP or Adenosine Triphosphate is used for storing energy.

PubChem

dATP or deoxy Adenosine Triphosphate is a nucleotide.  The deoxy form of the ribose is the form that's found in DNA.

PubChem

TTP or Thymidine Triphosphate is a nucleotide. The thymine base is used in DNA in place of uracil.

PubChem dCTP

dCTP  or deoxy Cytidine Triphosphate is a nucleotide.  The deoxy form of the ribose is the form that's found in DNA.

PubChem dGTP

dGTP  or deoxy Guanosine Triphosphate is a nucleotide.  The deoxy form of the ribose is the form that's found in DNA.

PubChem

UTP or Uracil Triphosphate is a nucleotide. Uracil is found in RNA instead of Thymine.

PubChem

L-methionine, an amino acid

PubChem

L-glutamic acid, an amino acid
